Holiday Dinner Timeline
3-4 weeks out
- Finalize the guest list
- Ask guests about allergies and diets
- Plan the menu and assign dishes to guests
- Order the turkey or main dish
- Check you have enough seating, tables, and dishes
- Get a roasting pan and meat thermometer
1 week out
- Make shopping lists by store section
- Buy non-perishables and drinks
- Clean out the fridge to make room
- Plan the oven schedule (what cooks when)
3-5 days before
- Start thawing a frozen turkey in the fridge (1 day per 4-5 pounds)
- Buy fresh produce and dairy
Day before
- Make pies and desserts
- Make cranberry sauce and other make-ahead sides
- Chop vegetables for sides
- Set the table
- Chill drinks
Day of
- Get the turkey in the oven on schedule
- Check the turkey reaches 165°F in the thickest part
- Rest the turkey 20-30 minutes before carving
- Reheat make-ahead sides
- Make the gravy
- Set out appetizers
After
- Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours
- Pack leftovers for guests
Hosting Overnight Guests
Guest room
- Wash sheets and make the bed
- Add an extra blanket and pillows
- Clear space in a closet or dresser
- Leave hangers
- Put a lamp and phone charger by the bed
- Leave the Wi-Fi password where they'll see it
Bathroom
- Set out fresh towels and washcloths
- Stock toilet paper, soap, and shampoo
- Leave a spare toothbrush and travel toiletries
Food
- Stock breakfast foods and coffee (ask what they like)
- Plan one easy dinner
Before they arrive
- Tidy the entry and main rooms
- Share arrival details (parking, door code, spare key)
- Make room in the fridge for their things
